With this straightforward military history of the decade leading up to the successful British siege of Louisbourg in 1758, the prolific Johnston, long a historian with Parks Canada, builds upon his two previous books on life in French colonial Louisbourg (Control and Order in French Colonial Louisbourg, 2001; Life and Religion at Louisbourg, 1996). He promises that this book will deal substantively with the French-British imperial conflict, with the Aboriginal peoples of Atlantic Canada, and with Louisbourg as a living community. However, he devotes most of the book to a detailed narrative of French efforts to strengthen the fortifications at Louisbourg, the series of feints and exploratory probes sent by the British against the fort, and the final climactic battle of 1758, in which the British won the first of several key victories in the conquest of Canada. For the broader context, readers might wish to consult Fred Anderson's Crucible of War: The Seven Years' War and the Fate of Empire in British North America, 1754-1766 (CH, Jul'00, 37-6428), Geoffrey Plank's An Unsettled Conquest: The British Campaign against the Peoples of Acadia (CH, Jul'01, 38-6403), and Johnston's Life and Religion at Louisbourg (1996).
