Our trail led northwest

Summary: In 1933 Madge Jones was a petite young college teacher in Kansas. Then she married Joe Many, an engineer with B.C.'s Department of Mines. Suddenly, quiet academic life was replaced by dugout canoes, river boats, horses, backpacks and bush planes. She learned to cross glacial streams on a log bridge which "looked like an enlarged pencil," and live with mosquitoes so thick they became part of their fried eggs; was awed by solitude, glaciers and mountains that stretched far beyond the horizon; and met many of the fiercely independent men and women who challenged this rugged northland.
